Swedish railway infrastructure and management reforms

Sweden is experiencing political discussions regarding the management and development of its national railway infrastructure.

An agreement between the Social Democrats and the Green Party proposes a reform to split Trafikverket. The goal is to establish a dedicated railway authority and return maintenance operations to direct state control to address a reported 25 percent decrease in productivity over the last decade. Additionally, infrastructure projects are underway in northern Sweden to enhance national resilience and defense capabilities.

Simultaneously, political debate has surfaced concerning the Tabergsbanan railway. While the Green Party supports upgrading and electrifying the existing line for economic and environmental reasons, critics from the Left Party question the long-term stability of this decision, citing historical preferences for alternative routes.

Recent developments show Trafikverket investigating the reactivation of abandoned lines in northern Sweden to bolster regional accessibility and total defense. This includes clearing vegetation on the decommissioned track between Morjärv and Haparanda to assess viability, and building test tracks between Jörn and Arvidsjaur to evaluate construction methods for long-unused railways.

However, disputes have emerged regarding capacity on the Malmbanan line. While Trafikverket maintains there is sufficient space for more trains between Svappavaara and Kiruna, LKAB asserts that current conditions are forcing them to use trucks for ore transport. LKAB logistics chief Linda Bjurholt suggested the issue is financial, stating, ‘If it were about money, we would have bought new trains at once.’
