Swedish unemployment insurance coverage decline
Overview
The Swedish Confederation of Professional Employees (TCO) has reported a significant decline in the effectiveness of unemployment insurance (a-kassa) for white-collar workers. Data indicates that only 17 percent of full-time professional employees can currently receive 80 percent of their previous salary, a decrease from 24 percent in 2021.
TCO attributes this decline to the unemployment insurance income cap failing to keep pace with wage developments, as well as policy changes such as benefit reductions after three months of unemployment and stricter qualification requirements. TCO chairperson Therese Svanström stated that the current situation “weakens financial security and risks harming labor market matching,” noting that these measures may force highly qualified individuals into unsuitable low-skilled positions.
