Swedish welfare and healthcare reform proposals

Swedish political parties are proposing various reforms to the national welfare and healthcare systems, specifically targeting psychiatric care and elderly care.

The Sweden Democrats (SD) have proposed establishing state-run psychiatric homes to provide long-term, permanent residential support for individuals with extensive psychiatric needs. Party leader Jimmie Åkesson described the initiative as a “modern version of traditional mental hospitals,” aiming to support those who currently fall between municipal and regional responsibilities. The proposal, which could involve both open and closed wards, is part of a broader goal to nationalize healthcare.

In the realm of elderly care, political approaches vary. Vänsterpartiet has called for increased staffing and improved education, including a pilot project for a six-hour workday to improve working conditions. Meanwhile, the Sweden Democrats have advocated for greater autonomy and dignity for the elderly, suggesting that streamlining administration and increasing trust in staff can better direct municipal resources toward direct care.
