The Swiss banking and insurance sectors are navigating significant regulatory shifts alongside record asset growth. A parliamentary commission (WAK-S) has proposed a compromise regarding capital requirements for systemically important banks, suggesting a 50% CET1 requirement supplemented by Additional Tier 1 (AT1) bonds to strengthen the ‘too-big-to-fail’ framework. Economically, the industry continues to show momentum. Managed assets surpassed the 10 trillion franc milestone in the first half of 2026. Individual corporate performances show varied stability. Migros Bank reported a 14.3% increase in net profit to 151.5 million Swiss francs for the first half of the year, while Swiss Re maintained its 2026 profit target of 4.5 billion US dollars. In the insurance sector, Swiss Life reported an 8% increase in net profit to 649 million Swiss francs for the first half of 2026 and announced a new 250 million Swiss franc share buyback program. To increase efficiency through digitalization and automation, the company plans to cut approximately 600 jobs by 2028. These reductions are expected to be split roughly evenly between domestic operations in Switzerland and its international asset-management business, primarily Swiss Life Asset Managers. The company intends to achieve much of this reduction through natural attrition, noting that approximately 100 positions have already been reduced through selective hiring practices. An additional 100 positions are expected to be cut by the end of 2026.
