Overview
Switzerland has expressed growing concerns regarding its heavy reliance on Microsoft products, which has become the company’s tenth largest market globally. The Swiss Confederation faces economic vulnerabilities, such as price increases of up to 40%, and strategic risks involving potential data access by U.S. authorities.
In response, the Swiss federal government has launched a pilot project to migrate 3,000 workstations from Microsoft 365 to an open-source collaboration platform called openDesk. This initiative, representing approximately 7 percent of the federal administration’s 54,000 positions, is supported by a CHF 9 million investment from the Federal Chancellery. The pilot aims to enhance digital sovereignty, protect data from foreign access, and reduce dependency on a single vendor. A final decision on a full-scale migration for the entire federal apparatus will be made following the evaluation of this phase, which is scheduled for completion by the end of 2027.
