Diesel prices in Switzerland reached a record high of 2.41 francs per liter, driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, shipping risks in the Red Sea, and attacks on Russian refineries. Local supply was further tightened by low water levels on the Rhine river and a temporary work stoppage at the Cressier refinery in Neuchâtel. As prices continued to rise, reaching an average of 2.46 francs for diesel and 2.14 francs for gasoline, consumers began looking toward neighboring countries for cheaper fuel, a trend known as ‘tank tourism’. While Switzerland faced high costs, countries such as Austria and Germany planned tax reliefs to lower prices for motorists. To mitigate costs, experts advised Swiss consumers to time their purchases during specific hours and avoid refueling at isolated highway locations. By late 2025, Switzerland’s position in the European electric vehicle adoption rankings had declined to 16th place. Amag CEO Helmut Ruhl attributed this to contradictory framework conditions, including inconsistent cantonal motor vehicle taxes and a lack of charging infrastructure for renters. Economic pressures persist as diesel prices remain above 2.40 CHF per liter. A survey of 6,000 participants indicates that 38 percent of respondents already refuel abroad. For those traveling to Austria, the digital 1-day vignette for passenger cars is priced at 9.60 Euro for 2026, while motorcycles are priced at 3.80 Euro. To manage costs domestically, the Automobilclub Schweiz suggests refueling in the evening between 18:00 and 20:00 or avoiding peak weekend periods. By September 2026, fuel costs remain elevated, with diesel at approximately CHF 2.46 per liter and unleaded 95 gasoline at around CHF 2.14, largely due to geopolitical tensions involving Iran.
