Swiss tourist sentencing in Bali for Nyepi insult

Overview

Luzian Andrin Zgraggen, a 26-year-old Swiss national, was sentenced to one year in prison by the Denpasar District Court in Bali for violating Indonesia’s criminal code. The conviction stems from social media videos posted during Nyepi, the Balinese Hindu Day of Silence, on March 19, 2026.

During the 24-hour period of silence, which prohibits travel and work, Zgraggen filmed himself walking toward a beach while using profanity and describing the religious tradition as “crazy.” Although Zgraggen claimed in court that he acted out of hunger and frustration and did not intend to insult the culture, the court found him guilty of disseminating defamatory and blasphemous information via information technology.

Presiding judge Tjokorda Putra Budi Pastima stated that the defendant’s actions “offended the Balinese people, hurt their faith and provoked public outrage.” While prosecutors had sought a 15-month sentence, the court mitigated the term due to Zgraggen’s age, lack of a prior criminal record, and expressed remorse. Zgraggen had already served approximately five months in custody prior to the sentencing.
