While high commuting rates were previously attributed to a lack of urban housing, recent studies suggest commuting duration is largely independent of residential location. In the labor market, the construction sector faces a critical shortage of over 20,000 vacancies, driven by an aging workforce and young domestic workers gravitating toward the finance and technology sectors. To mitigate this, some construction roles offer high salaries. Additionally, the country manages approximately 400,000 cross-border commuters. Public acceptance of these workers is influenced by social integration; while foreign residents are often viewed favorably, cross-border commuters face scrutiny regarding wage disparities between Switzerland and neighboring countries.
