Switzerland natural hazard and emergency management

Overview

Switzerland is expanding its financial and technical efforts to mitigate natural hazards. Public spending for protection against threats like avalanches and debris flows is projected to increase from 656 million Swiss francs in 2024 to approximately 755 million Swiss francs in 2025. The federal government has also requested an additional 27 million Swiss francs for the 2025–2028 period to address extreme weather events.

To complement these physical protections, the Federal Council is seeking 165.4 million Swiss francs to modernize national warning and alarm systems. This includes upgrading the Alertswiss platform and implementing a new remote siren activation system to improve digital accessibility and data integration.

In parallel to these preventative measures, the country has reported several recent emergency incidents and fatal accidents. These include a fatal rockfall on the Matterhorn, a helicopter crash on the Spitzalpelifirn glacier, and various fatal or injurious vehicle collisions involving motorcyclists and drivers.
