System76 COSMIC desktop development
Overview
System76 has released successive updates to its Rust-based COSMIC desktop environment. The 1.8.0 release focused on a major overhaul of the cosmic-comp Wayland compositor, introducing enhanced touchscreen support, tablet emulation, and improved hardware detection for hybrid graphics laptops.
Subsequent update epoch-1.10.0 introduced technical refinements such as enabling wGPU rendering by default in the launcher and adding a screenshot gallery and image caching to the cosmic-store. While the environment continues to gain functional polish, developers have noted an ecosystem challenge: because COSMIC uses a custom toolkit rather than GTK or Qt, there is a current lack of native applications, leading to visual inconsistencies when running third-party software.
