T150 telescope installation in Teruel

Overview

The Astrophysical Observatory of Javalambre in Teruel, Spain, is preparing to host the T150, a planetary defense and space surveillance telescope. Managed by the Centro de Estudios de Física del Cosmos de Aragón (CEFCA), the project is currently in the procurement phase.

CEFCA has launched a €9.1 million tender for the instrument, which includes the design, supply, and construction of the telescope’s housing dome. The T150 will feature a 1.5-meter aperture and an exceptionally wide field of view, enabling it to scan the celestial vault every few days. The telescope is expected to detect approximately 7,000 objects annually, including asteroids as small as 18 meters, to assist in monitoring space debris and near-Earth objects. Following a 30-month execution period, the instrument is scheduled to begin scientific operations in 2029.
