Tadalafil use and glaucoma risk association
Overview
Research involving approximately 74,000 men has identified a statistical link between the use of tadalafil and an increased risk of glaucoma. One study indicates that users face a 22% higher risk of developing glaucoma, with a 33% increased risk for primary open-angle glaucoma and a 32% higher incidence of ocular hypertension.
While the relative risk is significant, researchers noted that the absolute difference remains small, with diagnosis rates appearing in just under 4% of users compared to approximately 3% of control groups. The findings, published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology, do not prove a direct cause-and-effect relationship, but researchers suggest that men using the medication for lower urinary tract symptoms may require closer ophthalmic monitoring.
In Brazil, health data showed a massive increase in tadalafil consumption between 2024 and 2025, rising from three million to nearly 65 million units. Experts have noted concerns regarding off-label use among younger populations as a gym supplement or pre-workout.
