The fourth installment of the Spanish animation franchise, ‘Tadeo Jones y la lámpara maravillosa’ (also referred to as ‘Tad and the Magic Lamp’), was released in Spain on August 26. Directed by Enrique Gato, the film follows Tadeo and Sara as they navigate parenthood with their two-year-old daughter, Oli. The plot involves a time-traveling character named Momie (or Momia) who attempts to use a magical lamp from ‘One Thousand and One Nights’ to return to her youth, triggering a temporal crisis. The narrative spans multiple locations, including London, Peru, Greece, the Middle East, and Latin America. In addition to exploring themes of family and maturity, the film addresses the impact of artificial intelligence on society. During a press tour in Madrid, director Enrique Gato emphasized the importance of humans shaping AI to be a “useful tool rather than a replacement for human creativity,” noting the need for humans to learn to coexist with the technology. Voice actor Carlos Latre expressed concerns regarding AI-generated voices, stating, “Our skin, our soul, there is no machine that can copy that.” Produced by studios including Telecinco Cinema and Lightbox Animation Studios, and distributed by Paramount Pictures, the franchise has grown from a 2004 short film into Spain’s largest animation brand.
