The Taipei mayoral race intensified in late 2026 as candidates clashed over drug and education policies. Chiang Wan-an criticized Shen Bo-yang for past writings advocating for harm reduction, while Shen countered by highlighting existing city programs and his four-pillar education plan. In late September, tensions rose during a temple banquet where the chairman expressed support for Shen and criticized Chiang’s perceived absence from local activities. By early October, Shen’s campaign launch drew massive crowds and high-profile support from President Lai Ching-te and former President Tsai Ing-wen. However, the event triggered a backlash from Chinese netizens regarding celebrity host Kevin Tsai. Following pressure and boycott calls from mainland Chinese users, Tsai issued an apology on Weibo, stating he had ‘never supported Taiwan independence.’ Shen criticized the timing of the apology, suggesting it felt as though it had been ‘decided for him’ and describing the perceived interference from the Chinese Communist Party as ‘heartbreaking.’ Legal concerns emerged as prosecutors indicted Jun Zheng for allegedly directing a 24-hour surveillance operation against Shen. Recent polling from the Chin-Min Association shows a significant shift in momentum, with Shen leading at 50.3% against Chiang’s 33.3%, though localized polling in Zhongzheng District suggests Chiang maintains a slight edge. Amidst these shifts, national security officials have raised allegations of ‘AI-driven information warfare.’ Beijing has responded to Shen’s rising popularity by labeling him a ‘separatist’ and issuing a warrant for his arrest. In late October, Shen’s campaign reported a coordinated cyberattack from overseas IP addresses that flooded a campaign activity site with over 70,000 pieces of fraudulent data within one hour. ~~While the primary website remained secure, the incident added to~~ On October 29, Shen announced immediate legal action following the ~~digital tensions surrounding~~ circulation of deepfake audio clips falsely depicting him discussing the ~~race.~~ acceptance of kickbacks.
