Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an continues to advocate for the relocation of Songshan Airport to the central government to facilitate the construction of a 300-hectare AI industrial park and expand urban living space. During an Executive Yuan meeting, Chiang emphasized that the project is critical for Taipei’s long-term economic and technological growth, expressing a desire to initiate the process immediately despite critics suggesting the evaluation could take 20 years. Economic Minister Hung Ming-hsin maintains that while the relocation is a complex issue with diverging opinions, AI industry development must not be delayed. He has suggested Tamsui as a viable alternative for the AI park due to its land availability and infrastructure to avoid the lengthy consensus-building required for the Songshan site. New scrutiny has emerged regarding the impact of the relocation on emergency services. Minister of the Interior Liu Shih-fang warned that moving the airport could severely disrupt the National Airborne Service Corps, which utilizes Songshan as a critical base for search and rescue operations in Northern Taiwan and outlying islands like Matsu. Liu noted that the government has already allocated approximately 3.5 billion TWD for equipment updates and that no viable alternative site has been proposed to maintain current rescue capabilities. In response, Chiang stated the city is willing to conduct a comprehensive assessment with central government agencies. He suggested mitigation strategies, such as retaining helicopter capabilities at the site, utilizing high-speed rail, or establishing “green corridors” via highways to ensure rapid transport from Taoyuan Airport. Regarding political developments, Chiang and other Kuomintang members have addressed rumors regarding a petition to expel media personality Chang Shao-kang from the party following his interviews with a Democratic Progressive Party candidate. Chiang expressed gratitude for Chang’s support He further argued that medical transport needs are diverse and called for party unity, while some party members dismissed reports of the petition as “baseless rumors.” not all cases constitute critical emergencies.
