Taiwan’s Executive Yuan has approved a 2027 central government general budget totaling NT$3.9266 trillion, featuring a record defense allocation of NT$1.1225 trillion. This spending, which exceeds 3% of Taiwan's GDP for the first time, is intended to accelerate military modernization in drones, missiles, and submarine development. To further enhance surveillance, the government has proposed a special law to procure military drones with a budget of up to NT$210 billion between 2027 and 2031. In addition to the general budget, the Executive Yuan approved a supplementary budget of approximately NT$607.6 billion. This includes NT$145.7 billion for weapons, ammunition, and personnel benefits, specifically allocating NT$55.9 billion for unmanned vehicles. Other supplementary funds cover a NT$233.8 billion capital increase for CPC Corporation, livelihood stabilization measures related to Middle East conflicts, and post-disaster reconstruction following the Hualien Mataian Creek landslide. The administration faces significant legislative hurdles. Opposition parties, including the Kuomintang (KMT), have signaled intent to scrutinize spending closely. Expanding on defense readiness, Taiwan is investing approximately $450 million (NT$14.14 billion) to expand domestic weapons and ammunition production between 2026 and 2032.
