Maritime tensions persisted through July 2026, as China's coast guard conducted patrols east of Taiwan on July 31. Led by the vessel Xiushan and supported by the Chongming, the operation took place approximately 151 nautical miles east of Orchid Island. Taiwan's Coast Guard Administration deployed the patrol ship Taipei to monitor the vessels, characterizing the patrols as "fake law-enforcement" “fake law-enforcement” intended to expand Beijing's jurisdiction. This incident also highlighted increased security cooperation, with images released by the United States' de-facto embassy showing the Taiwan coast guard sailing alongside the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Midgett. Parallel to the Han Kuang military exercises, Taiwan has moved forward with large-scale urban resilience and air defense drills. On August 10, a phased exercise began in several central counties, including Taichung and Changhua. A key component of these drills is a simulated mobile network slowdown, where 4G and 5G data speeds are reduced to approximately 1% of normal levels to simulate communications constraints during war or cyberattacks. While high-bandwidth services like video streaming and mobile payments are restricted, essential services such as voice calls and emergency alerts remain functional. A second phase of the drill is scheduled for On August 11, drills extended to the offshore islands of Kinmen, Matsu, and Penghu. The northern region, including Taipei and Taipei, New Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Keelung, and Yilan, is scheduled for exercises on August 13. These northern drills will also implement the 30-minute mobile network speed reduction. Amidst these security exercises, the Central Weather Administration has warned of heavy rainfall and potential thunderstorms across central, southern, and northern regions due to southwest winds and low-pressure systems.
