Tajogaite volcano impact on La Palma cemetery
Overview
The Tajogaite volcanic eruption on La Palma caused significant damage to the Nuestra Señora de Los Ángeles Cemetery in Las Manchas. A large magma flow entered the site, burying or isolating more than 1,500 burial niches out of 2,316 occupied spaces and resulting in the loss of 288 graves.
Following municipal decisions made in late 2023, recovery efforts were initiated to remove the lava. Authorities in Los Llanos de Aridane and the Cabildo of La Palma have since completed the removal of approximately 30,000 cubic meters of lava. This operation has successfully restored 1,212 of the impacted niches, achieving a recovery rate of over 80%. While the majority of the site has been reclaimed, approximately 288 niches could not be recovered. The completion of the lava removal allows for subsequent interventions to restore cemetery infrastructure.
