On August 9, 2026, the Taliban’s General Directorate of Intelligence detained two Afghan employees of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) in Herat. United Nations deputy spokesman Farhan Haq confirmed the arrests, stating that the mission had not been informed of specific charges and was denied permission to visit the detainees. Human Rights Watch warned that such detentions threatened the delivery of humanitarian aid. Following their detention, the two staff members were released by Taliban authorities on the morning of August 20. ~~While~~ UNAMA reported that the employees appeared to be in good health, ~~UNAMA reported that it~~ though the organization had not received formal notification regarding the reasons for the initial arrest and noted that the charges against the men appeared to have been dropped. The ~~organization continues to follow up to ensure the safety~~ release occurred amid a broader pattern of ~~its personnel~~ arrests in Herat. Human Rights Watch reported that six senior members of the Women and Children Legal Research Foundation had been held since July 18. Other reported detentions in the ~~respect of UN privileges~~ region include humanitarian workers held over grooming regulations and ~~immunities.~~ numerous women arrested for failing to wear the chador or burqa.
