Taliban restrictions on Afghan tourism

The Taliban-led government in Afghanistan is attempting to revitalize the national economy by promoting tourism to its natural landscapes and historical sites, such as the Bamiyan ruins and Band-e-Amir National Park. Officials report that over ten thousand foreign tourists visited the country last year and claim to offer a safe, affordable environment.

However, tourism is heavily constrained by strict cultural and religious mandates. In Band-e-Amir National Park, women have been prohibited from visiting to uphold specific moral standards. Mohammad Khalid Hanafi, representing the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, has justified this ban, citing the need to maintain moral standards. This restriction has been noted by visitors who highlight the inequality regarding access to public leisure spaces.

While the government seeks to present a more open image to attract foreign visitors, the country remains one of the most repressive environments globally for women and girls. Systematic restrictions on education, employment, and freedom of movement affect nearly 80% of young women, and these gender-based limitations directly impact tourism. Despite government promises of safety, international authorities continue to warn of serious security risks, and the ongoing humanitarian crisis continues to shadow efforts to engage with the international community.
