Tamil Nadu agricultural incentive and procurement trends

Overview

The Tamil Nadu government implemented increased incentives for paddy and sugarcane to support farmers facing rising production costs for fertilizer and diesel. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced revised incentives that brought total procurement prices to Rs 2,750 per quintal for fine-variety paddy and Rs 2,600 for common variety. While agricultural associations welcomed the hikes, they noted the amounts were lower than those previously cited in the TVK manifesto.

Following these incentive revisions, the state recorded an all-time high in paddy procurement for the 2025-26 season, reaching 64.2 lakh metric tonnes (MT). This figure marks an increase of 16.22 lakh MT over the previous year. The surge in procurement, managed by the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation and the National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation of India, was attributed to favorable climatic conditions, timely reservoir water releases, and the increased state incentives.
