Tamil Nadu election petition legal proceedings

The Madras High Court is reviewing several election petitions following the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Initially, the court dismissed a petition regarding the Colachel constituency, ruling that a candidate’s belief that their service should have yielded more votes was insufficient grounds to contest results.

Other petitions challenging the election of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay in the Perambur and Tiruchirappalli (East) constituencies were adjourned. Subsequently, the court extended an interim stay on the notification of by-elections in five constituencies—Tiruchy East, Viralimalai, Perundurai, Ambasamudram, and Karur—until September 8. The Election Commission of India indicated it does not intend to notify these elections while related petitions remain pending, a position opposed by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government. Additionally, DMK president MK Stalin has filed a petition challenging the victory of a TVK candidate in the Kolathur constituency, alleging irregularities with voting machines and VVPATs.
