In August 2026, nine fishermen from the Ramanathapuram district were arrested along with their mechanized boat, marking the second such incident that month. The Chief Minister reported that a total of 49 Indian fishermen are currently held in Sri Lankan custody.

While the Chief Minister emphasized the “anxiety and insecurity” caused to coastal communities, Sri Lankan authorities have maintained that these arrests are necessary to enforce maritime boundaries and prevent illegal fishing practices like bottom trawling.
