Higher education institutions in Tamil Nadu are experiencing significant vacancy rates in undergraduate admissions. Following the second round of the Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) 2026 process, student enrollment for BE and B Tech courses declined by 4.45 percentage points compared to the previous year. While prominent institutions maintained high occupancy, approximately 106,583 engineering seats remained vacant, leaving only about 41 per cent of total seats filled. Data indicated a selective preference for established institutions and specific branches such as Computer Science, Electronics and Communication, and Information Technology. By the conclusion of the third round of engineering counselling, 37,943 engineering seats remained unfilled out of the 195,570 seats designated for the TNEA process. The vacancy issue extended to specific institutions, with 24 colleges reporting zero admissions and 64 colleges admitting fewer than 10 students. Additionally, vacancies were noted in government arts and science colleges in the Coimbatore district, where hundreds of seats remained unfilled in various categories. Following the conclusion of the general engineering admission counselling, the number of unfilled seats has been reported at over 53,000. This represents an increase in vacancies compared to the approximately 42,512 unfilled seats recorded last year. The number of colleges achieving 100 per cent admission capacity also saw a decline, dropping from 39 last year to 30 this year. Computer Science Engineering remains the most preferred course, accounting for roughly 55 per cent of filled seats. Experts suggest that the expansion of seat intake in deemed universities may be impacting enrollment in rural colleges as students concentrate applications on established institutions.
