Overview

Farmers in Tamil Nadu have intensified protests regarding the Cauvery water dispute with Karnataka. In early August, demonstrators led by Ayya Kannu of the Farmers’ Association staged a protest at Tiruchirappalli by burying themselves in sand. The group demanded the immediate release of water for irrigation, alleging that Karnataka failed to honor Supreme Court directives and threatened the Kuruvai crop. Protesters also called for the Tamil Nadu government to seek ₹1 lakh crore in compensation and expressed opposition to the proposed Mekedatu dam.

By September, the situation escalated as police detained approximately 50 farmers in Tiruchirappalli. The group, led by P Ayyakannu of the National South Indian Rivers Inter-Linking Farmers Association, was intercepted while attempting to travel to New Delhi to petition President Droupadi Murmu. The farmers maintain that Karnataka has exceeded established cultivation limits and continue to demand compensation for the lack of water release.
