A political dispute has emerged between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka following the deaths of three Tamil-origin men—identified as Anthony Sami, John Rose Peter, and Kumar—during an anti-poaching operation in the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary. The Karnataka Forest Department reported that the men were shot during an encounter while attempting to hunt deer. However, Tamil Nadu leaders, including Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, have condemned the incident, describing it as a potential “fake encounter” and a human rights violation. Tamil Nadu officials maintain the men were in the forest only to search for cattle and have demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe. As the situation progressed, Tamil Nadu Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin cited a postmortem report suggesting the deceased suffered injuries such as fractured collarbones, alleging they were subjected to “custodial torture” and shot at close range. While Karnataka Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar urged Tamil Nadu not to interfere in Karnataka’s internal administrative matters, Tamil Nadu leaders continue to demand legal assistance for the families and a high-level judicial inquiry. In the Tamil Nadu Assembly, various parties have called for a high-level judicial inquiry and increased compensation for the families. While the Karnataka government provided Rs 5 lakh in compensation, local officials in Hanur have reportedly distributed additional funds to the families.
