Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly budget debates remaining key department grants

The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly has continued its budget session reconvened for the 2026-27 financial year. Following the presentation of the general and agriculture budgets in early August, the assembly has moved through various departmental grant demands. Recent deliberations included discussions on the Food and Consumer Protection and Cooperative departments. These debates addressed the public distribution system, consumer grievance redressal, and price control measures, alongside cooperative banking, crop loans, and financial assistance for farmers. During this period, the administration under Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay proposed several welfare expansions, such as increasing annual health insurance coverage from 5 lakh to 25 lakh rupees for eligible families, extending the Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme to students in grades 6 through 8, and providing full waivers for eligible cooperative loans up to 75,000 rupees. As of late August, the assembly has budget session following a two-day weekend break. Having previously completed debates for 32 departments. The session departments, the House is scheduled now moving to address the remaining grant demands for four remaining key departments: the Welfare of Differently Abled Persons, the Prohibition and Excise, the Social Welfare and Women’s Rights, and the Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare. Proceedings are scheduled to commence with Question Hour, allowing ministers to respond to inquiries regarding government policies and constituency matters. Key ministerial involvement includes Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, who holds the portfolio for the welfare of differently abled persons, alongside K. Vignesh for Prohibition and Excise, K. Jagdishwari for Social Welfare departments. Expected topics include and Women’s Rights, and R. Vinod for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare. Legislators from both the ruling and opposition parties are expected to debate a range of critical issues, including welfare assistance for persons with disabilities, excise policy enforcement, women’s safety, social security programs, and various farmer support measures.
