Tamil Nadu poultry industry feed cost crisis
Overview
Poultry farmers in Tamil Nadu, India, are experiencing financial distress as rising feed costs outpace market prices for poultry products.
Maize prices have increased from approximately Rs 22 per kg to Rs 30 per kg, driven largely by the diversion of maize to ethanol production. Other essential feed components have seen even more dramatic surges: soya prices have doubled, phosphorus has tripled, and the cost of methionine has risen from Rs 150 to Rs 800 per kg. Some price hikes are reportedly linked to increased shipment costs associated with the Gulf war.
These soaring input costs have led to losses at the farm-gate level. For example, egg production costs are estimated at Rs 5.50 per unit against a selling price of Rs 5.20, while broiler chicken is selling at roughly Rs 80 per kg despite production costs estimated at Rs 110 per kg.
