Tamil Nadu water crisis deepens, reservoirs dry up

By late July 2026, Tamil Nadu’s water emergency had spread from irrigation shortages to a full‑blown drinking‑water crisis. Drought‑affected districts such as Namakkal, Perambalur and Tiruchirappalli faced evaporating groundwater and salinity spikes, while the state’s sand‑mining reopening further strained aquifers.

A report on 26 July revealed that 59 of the state’s 90 major dams were completely dry and another 16 held only a quarter to half of their capacity. More than 3,400 irrigation tanks had run out of water, with another 6,000 nearing depletion. Supplies in many districts fell to once every ten days, forcing residents to rely on private tankers and other temporary sources.

Groundwater levels dropped sharply in key Chennai‑feeding districts like Tiruvallur and Kanchipuram, prompting pumps to run longer and increasing electricity consumption. Neighboring southern states were also experiencing below‑average rainfall, compounding inflow challenges for Tamil Nadu’s reservoirs.

Farmers continued to urge the government to release water from the Mettur dam before the Adi Perukku festival in early August, as dam storage lingered at only 35 tmcft of a 93 tmcft capacity. The combined pressure on surface and groundwater supplies underscored the deepening severity of the state’s water crisis.
