Wind power production in Tamil Nadu saw a 3.31 percent increase during the first five months of the current fiscal year. While the April-June quarter experienced production declines, significant surges in July and August—including a record daily production high in August—offset those initial losses. However, the state later faced electricity shortages and unannounced power outages following a sudden decline in wind power generation and high temperatures that increased demand. To stabilize the grid and address public protests, the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) procured an additional 2,000 MW of electricity from the open market and various generating companies. Efforts to secure the grid continued as the state procured 2,500 MW in one week and an additional 1,500 MW on a subsequent Tuesday. Electricity Minister Nirmal Kumar stated that the government has procured sufficient power to prevent outages, clarifying that recent power cuts in certain areas were due to transmission and distribution issues rather than a lack of supply. The state is also working toward long-term power purchase agreements to stabilize costs.
