In July 2026, TAROM announced that the delivery of its first Boeing 737 MAX, originally slated for an earlier date, had been postponed to August 2026. By early August, the aircraft completed its inaugural test flight and was named after famed Romanian football coach Mircea Lucescu. On August 10, 2026, the airline released images of the aircraft during the manufacturing and painting stages at the Boeing factory in Renton, Washington. This ‘Mircea Lucescu’ plane is the first of four Boeing 737 MAX models scheduled to join the fleet. The new aircraft offers technical improvements over previous models, including a 20% reduction in fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions, a 50% reduction in noise footprint, and windows that are approximately 20% larger. The airline expects the second Boeing 737 MAX to enter service in September 2026, with the remaining two deliveries scheduled for the spring of 2027. This rollout is part of TAROM’s broader fleet-modernisation programme launched in 2023, which includes leasing agreements and seeks European Commission support amid rising fuel costs. In late August 2026, TAROM Tehnic expanded its maintenance and repair capabilities at Henri Coandă International Airport in Otopeni. Following an extension of its EASA Part-145 certification, the division is now authorized to perform base and line maintenance for several aircraft families, including the Airbus A319, A320, and A321, as well as Boeing 737 MAX 7, 8, and 9 models equipped with CFM LEAP-1B engines. On September 3, 2026, TAROM began the formal delivery process for its first Boeing 737-8. Company crews are collecting the aircraft from Boeing’s Seattle facilities to begin a two-stage ferry flight, traveling from Seattle to Keflavik, Iceland, before arriving in Bucharest. The airline noted that the values of ‘performance, discipline, perseverance, and confidence’ associated with Mircea Lucescu align with this new chapter.
