Tata Communications has announced plans to invest between $400 million and $450 million to develop an “AI Super Highway” in India. The project involves deploying approximately 10,000 kilometers of new long-distance fiber optic cables to create a high-speed, low-latency network connecting major artificial intelligence and data center hubs. The rollout is scheduled to occur in three phases over three to five years. The initial phase will establish a corridor linking Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, and Chennai. Subsequent phases aim to reach data center clusters on the east coast, including Visakhapatnam and Bhubaneswar, as well as western regions such as Jamnagar and GIFT City in Gujarat. This infrastructure is expected to add roughly 6 petabits per second of capacity to the company’s existing domestic network. The expansion intends to link domestic hubs with international networks, integrating with Tata Communications’ existing global backbone of subsea and terrestrial fiber to support the growing demands of cloud providers, AI developers, and large enterprises. The initiative coincides with rapid growth in India’s data center sector. Government data indicates that India’s cloud data capacity is projected to grow nearly five times by 2030. The broader ecosystem is attracting significant capital, with approximately $70 billion in ongoing investments and an additional $90 billion in announced projects involving major providers such as Google Cloud, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, Jio Platforms, and AdaniConneX.
