TE Tuzla emission spike and technical failure

Overview

The Tuzla Thermal Power Plant (TE Tuzla) reported that particulate emissions at Block 4 returned to designed limits following repairs to its ash pneumatic transport system. JP Elektroprivreda BiH stated the malfunction was resolved on August 23, followed by intensified cleaning of the electrofilter hoppers.

The incident has triggered significant political backlash. Federal Minister of Energy, Mining, and Industry Vedran Lakić has called for the resignations of TE Tuzla management and technical heads to ensure accountability for the environmental impact. Conversely, federal deputy Mahir Mešalić criticized the minister, suggesting that political leadership must also take responsibility for aging infrastructure and mismanagement.

To address technical stability and environmental compliance, Elektroprivreda BiH has committed 180 million KM for maintenance and upgrades at the Tuzla and Kakanj plants through mid-2026, representing a 40 million KM increase compared to previous years.
