A fire at the Teatro Municipal de Maipú caused significant structural damage and three injuries, including two civilians and one firefighter. Fire Department Second Commander Francisco Marengo reported that approximately 175 firefighters responded to the emergency. Maipú Mayor Tomás Vodanovic noted that very little of the building’s interior could be salvaged and suggested that demolition might be necessary. Following the incident, the municipality began reviewing remodeling contracts for a project intended for completion in December. As the situation progressed, Mayor Vodanovic estimated that the potential demolition could cost approximately $300 million. While a final decision depends on a technical evaluation of the building’s structural integrity, firefighters warned that high temperatures may have compromised its resistance. The Mayor indicated that replacing the cultural infrastructure could take two to three years. In recent developments, Emilia Malig, Chief of Staff for the Municipality of Maipú, convened a meeting with local councilors and directors to address infrastructure status and security measures. Mayor Vodanovic has also met with the Minister of Cultures, Arts, and Heritage, Francisco Undurraga, to discuss the reconstruction of a new cultural center. While demolition is estimated at 300 million pesos and design costs are expected to exceed 400 million pesos, the total cost for final construction is projected to surpass 13 billion pesos.
