Tejas Mk2 fighter jet development

Overview

The development timeline for the Tejas Mk2 fighter jet prototype has been adjusted, with the maiden flight now projected to occur between March and July 2027. This follows several previous delays that had targeted 2023, 2025, and 2026.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has implemented a four-prototype development roadmap. Following the initial mid-2027 flight, subsequent prototypes are scheduled for rollout between late 2027 and 2030. The first two aircraft will focus on aerodynamics and systems integration, while weapons trials are expected to begin around mid-2030 with the third prototype. Full production clearance is anticipated by 2031.

Due to these scheduling shifts, officials expect that the Tejas Mk2 will not be physically present at Aero India 2027 in Bengaluru. Instead, the event will likely feature full-scale mock-ups or static models rather than the actual aircraft.
