Temoac mayor killed, gang probe expands

Overview

On 22 July 2026, Mayor Valentín Lavín Romero was shot dead inside Temoac’s municipal palace. Federal Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch confirmed that Lavín was under a formal investigation for alleged links to the criminal cells Los Aparicio and Los Huazulco, which are implicated in kidnapping, extortion, drug trafficking and homicides. The probe also examines a possible role in the killings of activists Samir Flores Soberanes and Sandra Camacho Flores.

Lavín’s mother‑in‑law, Andrea “La Patrona,” a former municipal treasurer, and his father‑in‑law Arturo Romero have been detained as suspected operatives. A coordinated federal‑state operation has been deployed to secure Temoac, collect evidence and pursue the assailants.

The murder adds to a wave of political violence that has seen 14 municipal presidents killed during President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration. Sheinbaum highlighted a recent 54 % drop in homicides in Morelos as part of her “Plan Operativo Morelos.”

The municipal council appointed deputy mayor Esperanza Galván Zavala as interim mayor, a move intended to ensure continuity of municipal services while the investigation continues.
