The Temuco-Gorbea railway extension project in Chile's La AraucanÃa Region has reached 20% physical progress in its first phase. The $37.7 million infrastructure undertaking involves renewing 45 kilometers of track, installing concrete sleepers, and constructing 32 pedestrian crossings. These upgrades are intended to increase passenger train speeds from 50 km/h to 130 km/h and freight speeds to 100 km/h. The project also includes a second phase for station improvements and the integration of new trains manufactured in China. New rolling stock is expected to arrive in August, with testing scheduled for 2026. Passenger services are projected to resume in the second half of 2027, with the project aiming to serve more than 4 million passengers annually. Recent updates confirm that work is currently focused on infrastructure replacement, including track renewal and the installation of perimeter fencing.
