Temuco hospital infant death investigation

Overview

An investigation at the Hospital Hernán Henríquez Aravena in Temuco determined that an improperly adjusted crib led to the death of 11-month-old Valentín. A report from the Homicide Brigade ruled out material wear and tear and cleared the child’s mother of responsibility for the fall.

While technical analysis confirmed the incorrect adjustment caused the incident, investigators have not identified the specific staff member responsible due to conflicting witness testimonies. No individual criminal responsibility has been established, and prosecutors are deciding whether to continue inquiries or close the investigation.

In a separate legal action, the family is pursuing a civil lawsuit against the Regional Hospital and the Araucanía Health Service, seeking $400 million in compensation for institutional negligence.
