Archaeological research into the Terracotta Army of Emperor Qin Shi Huang has provided new insights into the demographic makeup of the workforce responsible for creating the figures. An international team, led by archaeologist Xiaoxi Li from the Emperor Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum Site Museum, analyzed 79 unique fingerprints found on 36 terracotta warriors. Using a Bayesian statistical model to analyze ridge width and distances, researchers estimated that the workforce included approximately 45% adult men, 32.7% adult women, and 22.3% children under the age of 15. These findings, published in the ‘Journal of Cultural Heritage’, challenge the long-held belief that the project was composed exclusively or primarily of adult men. The presence of younger individuals may reflect historical Qin Dynasty apprenticeship systems, where historical records suggest trainees could complete training in as little as one year. Furthermore, this demographic breakdown aligns with historical Qin and Han legal texts regarding forced labor and criminal responsibility.
