Terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center

Overview

The World Trade Center in New York City was the site of two major terrorist incidents. On February 26, 1993, a radical group detonated an explosive charge in the North Tower’s underground parking garage, causing six deaths, over 1,000 injuries, and approximately $500 million in damages.

On September 11, 2001, the complex was struck by airplanes, resulting in the total collapse of the Twin Towers and 2,977 deaths. While the structures were originally designed to withstand the impact of a Boeing 707, the 2001 attacks led to permanent changes in airspace regulations over Manhattan to restrict low-altitude civilian flights.
