A competition has emerged between Tesla and California-based startup Alef Aeronautics regarding flying car technology. Alef Aeronautics showcased its Model Zero Ultralight, which utilizes distributed electric propulsion (DEP) for vertical takeoff and landing, marking its 1,000th test flight. CEO Jim Dukhovny noted that while the company has operated in the sector for 11 years, the entry of competitors is a positive signal for market investment and regulatory development. Tesla has responded by unveiling a new Roadster lineup featuring flight capabilities powered by SpaceX cooling gas thruster technology. The lineup includes Performance, Thrust, and Rocket versions, with the Rocket model specifically designed for lift via high-pressure gas propulsion. While Tesla aims for production by 2028, details on pricing and flight duration are currently undisclosed. Alef Aeronautics has secured significant backing from the Valencia-based investment fund Draper B1, led by Enrique Penichet. This investment follows the company’s milestone of 1,000 flights and its achievement of a special airworthiness certification from the United States government, making it the first flying car officially recognized by the state. Unlike standard electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicles, Alef’s technology is designed to utilize existing road infrastructure for driving and parking. Recent developments include a demonstration of the Tesla Roadster that has sparked debate over whether the technology is a “genuine engineering breakthrough or a highly choreographed spectacle.” In response, Alef Aeronautics released footage of its Model A. The electric Model A, which has been in development since 2015, features a specialized body housing multiple propellers. Alef reports a road range of 320 kilometers and a flight range of approximately 180 kilometers, with a target market price of approximately $300,000. Both companies face significant challenges regarding safety regulations, road legality, and pilot certification before their respective technologies can achieve mass commercialization.
