Tesla and Sunrun residential battery grid dispatch

Overview

Tesla and Sunrun coordinated a residential virtual power plant (VPP) dispatch during a severe heatwave on September 9, 2026. The operation delivered a record 580 megawatts (MW) of electricity to the California power grid during a three-hour window, triggered by extreme demand and wholesale electricity prices exceeding $200 per megawatt-hour.

The initiative utilized more than 140,000 residential batteries to supply power during peak evening hours when solar generation decreases and air-conditioning demand rises. Of the total power provided, approximately 110,000 Tesla Powerwalls contributed 517 MW. Within that specific group, Sunrun owned and operated 55% of the units. An additional 30,000 batteries within Sunrun’s fleet provided the remaining 63 MW. The dispatch was managed through the California Energy Commission’s Demand Side Grid Support (DSGS) and the California Public Utilities Commission’s Emergency Load Reduction Program (ELRP).

Sunrun CEO Mary Powell stated that the scale of these distributed home batteries is now larger than many peaker power plants combined. While specific revenue from this dispatch has not been disclosed, the event demonstrates the ability of Tesla’s energy hardware to function as a grid asset, providing a new catalyst for investors. A report by The Brattle Group suggests such programs could provide up to $206 million in net cost savings to Californians by 2028 by stabilizing the grid and reducing the need for new infrastructure.
