Tesla Emergency Drive Away feature introduction
Overview
Tesla has released a software update, version 2026.38.3, introducing a safety feature called ‘Emergency Drive Away’. This function allows drivers to bypass the standard electronic lockout and shift into gear to leave a Supercharger station even if the charging cable remains connected.
The feature is intended as a last resort for life-threatening situations, following a fatal shooting incident at a Supercharger station in Twin Falls, Idaho, where drivers could not quickly exit while tethered to their vehicles. Tesla warns that using this function will cause significant physical damage to the vehicle’s charge port and the Supercharger hardware, with potential repair costs reaching $25,000. Currently, the capability is limited to Superchargers in the United States and does not apply to home charging stations.
