The labor dispute between the Swedish union IF Metall and Tesla has concluded after 1,021 days. The industrial action, which began on October 27, 2023, centered on Tesla’s refusal to sign a collective bargaining agreement. IF Metall announced the end of the strike, effective August 19, 2026. The conflict ended after Tesla reportedly bought out the remaining striking members, estimated at approximately 80 workers, by providing severance packages to terminate their employment. These packages were reportedly equivalent to 1.5 years of salary, a move estimated to have cost the manufacturer around 67 million Swedish kronor. Tesla faced logistical challenges including port blockades in Denmark, Norway, and Finland. While Tesla maintained its labor model to preserve long-term flexibility, the prolonged conflict coincided with a 67% drop in Swedish vehicle registrations. Following the resolution, labor activists have reflected on the outcome. Veteran union activist KG Wanngård emphasized the necessity for “sharper analysis and more courage within the labor movement.” The dispute has highlighted tensions between centralized institutional solidarity and self-organized worker solidarity across different sectors. Within the union, internal criticism has emerged regarding administrative errors, specifically a tax issue that required members to repay significant sums. Despite this, some local leaders have expressed continued confidence in IF Metall’s leadership while calling for investigations to improve future responses.
