Tesla is aggressively scaling its Optimus humanoid robot program, supported by massive financial backing. To fund anticipated expenditures exceeding $25 billion in 2026—covering AI infrastructure, semiconductor manufacturing, and robotics—the company has secured $30 billion in credit facilities. This includes a $20 billion delayed-draw term loan with Citibank and revolving credit lines with Wells Fargo. On the production front, Tesla is ramping up manufacturing with a goal of reaching 1,000 robots per week by the end of 2026. While weekly output has increased to several hundred units, technical hurdles persist. The robot’s hands remain a primary bottleneck, requiring the manual assembly of over 100 complex components. To improve durability, Tesla is exploring the use of replaceable sensor gloves. To advance AI capabilities, Tesla is utilizing imitation learning and has collected over 500,000 hours of training data. However, this data collection has faced internal resistance. Employees in Texas and California have reportedly refused to wear motion-capture gear, citing fears that the collected data will be used to automate their own positions. In response, Tesla has transitioned to using specialized training teams and dedicated data collection centers. To facilitate high-volume production and lower hardware costs, Tesla is reducing the RAM capacity of its next-generation AI chips. Elon Musk announced that the AI5 chip’s memory will be cut from 144GB to 72GB of LP5, while the subsequent AI6 chip will see a one-third reduction from 216GB to 144GB of LP6. Musk stated this was necessary to address potential global DRAM supply bottlenecks and argued the change would have a “negligible effect” on performance. The AI5 chip, intended for Optimus and training supercomputers, is slated for high-volume production in 2027, with manufacturing split between Samsung and TSMC.
