Tesla has expanded the scope of its electric Semi truck rollout through new technical specifications for Europe and a significant commercial order in the United States. In Europe, Tesla unveiled specifications for the Semi at the IAA Transportation exhibition, noting a range of up to 550 kilometers at a 40-ton gross weight. To support this, the company plans to install over 100 megawatt-capacity charging points across 21 European locations, focusing on Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Sweden, and the Benelux countries. The vehicle is expected to begin European deliveries in 2027. In the United States, the Zero-Emission Truck Shipper-Carrier Alliance Leading Electrification (ZET SCALE) placed an order for 2,500 Tesla Semi Class 8 trucks. Facilitated by Catalyst Mobility and the Smart Freight Centre, this order includes founding members such as Microsoft and PepsiCo. The trucks are intended to operate from various freight hubs, including locations in California, Seattle, Texas, and Chicago. ZET SCALE intends to eventually expand its program to include at least 10,000 electric trucks. Following the launch of a dedicated production plant in Sparks, Nevada, Tesla has commenced high-volume deliveries of the Semi. The Nevada facility is designed for an annual capacity of 50,000 units. The vehicle is offered in two configurations: a Standard Range model with a 325-mile range and a Long Range model capable of up to 500 miles. Both models utilize an 800kW three-motor powertrain. Beyond the ZET SCALE order, other customers receiving deliveries or placing orders include DHL, US Foods, and the Swedish company Einride, which committed to 500 units. The production process utilizes high levels of vertical integration, including in-house manufacturing of batteries, drive axles, and seats.
