Tetrachromacy in women

In July 2026 visual artist Končeta Antiko reported that she could distinguish many more shades than her students, prompting genetic testing that confirmed she possesses a fourth type of cone cell—a condition known as tetrachromacy. Researchers estimate that about 12 % of biological women carry the genetic potential for this extra cone, though many are unaware of it.

Later that month, coverage highlighted the same artist (named Concetta Antico in the report) and explained that the X‑chromosome variant can give women a fourth retinal cone, expanding their possible colour range. Scientists noted that standard eye exams do not detect the additional cone and that the brain must also process the extra information for the enhanced perception to manifest. Ongoing studies aim to better understand how the fourth cone influences visual experience and to develop methods for testing the phenomenon.
