Texas electricity transmission infrastructure expansion

The Public Utility Commission of Texas is evaluating several large-scale high-voltage transmission line projects intended to support the state’s industrial sector and the oil and gas industry.

Initially, regulators considered three massive 765-kilovolt proposals spanning nearly 800 miles across Central and South Texas. Commission Chairman Thomas Gleeson expressed reservations regarding these proposals, recommending that two be sent back to administrative courts because recommendations were “incomplete,” specifically regarding federal reliability standards.

Following this review, the Commission approved the 370-mile Howard Solstice transmission line project, which is designed to transport electricity to the Permian Basin. This approval was made conditional, requiring companies to work with landowners to modify routes to minimize property damage and construction through grasslands. As with the previous deliberations, two other proposals were sent back to administrative courts due to a lack of clarity concerning consumer savings and federal reliability standards.
