Thai baht moves amid US‑Iran tensions

On July 25, the Thai baht slipped to about 33.8 per US dollar, its weakest level in 15 months. Analysts linked the decline to a stronger dollar and heightened geopolitical risk from Middle‑East tensions, which pushed investors toward safe‑haven assets. The weakness also reflected Thailand’s costly energy imports, a fragile tourism recovery and capital‑flow dynamics.

Two days later, on July 27, the baht reopened stronger at 33.57 per dollar after the United States briefly halted its air attacks on Iran. The pause eased market anxiety, allowing the currency to firm within the 33.50‑33.75 range expected by analysts. The same day, June export data showed a 20.8 % year‑on‑year rise, driven by electronics and a surge in shipments to the United States. While the export boost supported the baht, analysts warned that potential U.S. Section 301 tariffs on certain Thai goods could offset the momentum.
