Thai Hai village communal and eco-tourism development
Overview
Thai Hai, a village in Vietnam’s Thai Nguyen province, operates under a communal living model established by founder Nguyen Thi Thanh Hai to preserve Tay culture. The community of over 200 residents utilizes a shared economy where earnings from activities such as tea harvesting, woodworking, and farming are contributed to a communal fund to cover essential expenses like medical bills, education, and infrastructure repairs. To maintain traditional architecture, the village relocated approximately 30 ancient stilt houses to prevent the use of modern brick structures.
The village, also known as the Thai Hai Ethnic Stilt House Eco-Tourism Village Conservation Area, has evolved into a recognized ecological site. Spanning 25 hectares, it offers visitors experiences of Tay and Nung customs, including traditional Then singing and local culinary traditions. UN Tourism has recognized the site as one of the best tourism villages in the world.
